    Mott MacDonald led an international joint venture on a six-year contract as independent checking and site engineer on the Taiwan High Speed Rail project. At the time of development, it was among the world’s largest privately funded transport schemes.

    Japanese companies built original system, but expect European competition

     Taiwan High Speed Rail will call on rolling-stock manufacturers worldwide to bid for its upcoming purchase of new train cars, the company revealed this month.

    Japanese businesses have hoped to secure projects worth up to 100 billion yen ($880 million) from the Taiwanese company. All 34 of Taiwan High Speed Rail's current bullet train cars were produced by Japanese companies like Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Hitachi and Nippon Sharyo.
